Insulate Right and Tight the First Time!

Flat Roof Spray Foam Insulation, Northampton, MA – Summer 2018

A local commercial roofer needed help with a specific insulation detail on a flat roof. The building inspector required an R30 insulation at the eave and extending back to parapet supports, plus it had to be airtight. To construct this detail using stacked layers of foam board would be very difficult and nearly impossible to make truly air tight. The best option to complete this specific task is to use closed cell spray foam. It had to be installed ASAP so not to hold up roof mechanicals and Foam USA answered the call: 5″ of closed cell GACO ONE PASS spray foam was installed for R35, no seams, air-tight. The install was completed in 3 hours and fully walkable. One advantage that resulted from closed cell spray foam was its ability to further provide structural rigidity to the angle braces.

Northampton Williston School, Easthampton, MA.  GC: Newfield Construction – Winter/Spring, 2017/2018

Over the past four months Foam USA has installed all the spray foam insulation in the faculty buildings and center dormitory at the Williston Northampton School. The project was phased in sequence with other trades work and inspections. The thermal boundary is comprised of: 7″ closed cell spray on the roof decks, R50 and 5.5″ open cell spay foam in the exterior walls, R21. Spray foam installed were Gaco OnePass closed cell and UTC open cell. The window frames were air sealed with low expansion foam made by Todol-Purfill. In addition to insulation, Cozy Home Performance installed sound proofing mineral wool batts in every partition wall. The general contractor, Newfield Construction of Hartford, CT, has been easy to work with and supportive. All insulation passed inspection by a HERS energy rater and the town building inspector.

First Congregations Church, Amherst, MA   GC: DA Sullivan and Sons – Fall, 2017

Foam USA had another successful project with DA Sullivan & Sons, INC. We collaborated on the construction of an addition at the First Congregational Church in Amherst, MA. Project work-scopes included open cell spray foam on framed walls and closed cell foam on block step walls. In the ceiling flat 3″ closed cell was installed against the roof deck in order to achieve full vapor barrier control with remainder infilled with 8″ open cell. Total R = R53. One advantage with the use of the closed cell spray foam was it allowed for the tie-together of the original brick wall to the new concrete wall. A complete air barrier was established. If left to only to the mortar infill a continuous air barrier would not been achieved. Details matter.
